More Retail Earnings
Next week, we’ll get earnings from retailers including Lowe’s, Macy’s, Kohl’s, Nordstrom, Dollar Tree, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Urban Outfitters, and BJ’s Wholesale Club, among others. Zoom Video Communications, Nvidia, and TD Bank will also release second-quarter results. Among the major retailers reporting so far, nearly four-fifths, or 79% have reported profit above analysts’ estimates, while 64% have reported revenue that beat expectations, according to Refinitiv.
Jackson Hole Economic Symposium
Starting Thursday, Federal Reserve policymakers will gather for the three-day Jackson Hole Economic Symposium, hosted annually by the Kansas City Fed since 1981. It’s an event where central bankers, finance ministers, economists, and academics from around the world gather to discuss the most pressing economic issues of the day. This year’s symposium is titled “Structural Shifts in the World Economy” and will likely focus on how central banks, having raised interest rates to the highest level in more than two decades, can steer economies away from recession.
Home Sales Update
On Tuesday, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) will report on existing home sales, which are projected to have fallen slightly to 4.15 million units last month, from 4.16 million in June. Sales were likely impacted by rising mortgage rates, which hit a 21-year high this week, while a rebound in home prices since February has reduced affordability. Despite this, new home sales likely rose to 701,000 last month, up from 697,000 in June.
